McCauley’s Impressive Career
Wes McCauley has been part of the NHL for a long time. He made his debut as a referee in 2003 and became full-time in 2005. Since then, he has worked in 1,439 regular-season games and 211 playoff games – a truly impressive record.
Before becoming a referee, McCauley played college hockey at Michigan State University between 1989 and 1993. In 1990, he was picked 150th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL Draft. He didn’t play in the NHL, but he did compete in smaller leagues, including the ECHL and Italy’s pro hockey league.
A Look at Shandor Alphonso’s Background
Shandor Alphonso, who McCauley replaced, has also built a solid career. He started officiating in the NHL on October 17, 2014, and has worked 735 regular-season games and 42 playoff games so far.
Before becoming a linesman, Alphonso was a left winger in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he played for the Sudbury Wolves from 2001 to 2004. He scored 73 points in 183 OHL games. Later, he played Junior A hockey and continued his career at Lakehead University in U Sports for five years.
